Fokker DR1 TriplaneThe mount of many German air aces of the Great War, Manfred von Richthoffen being the most famous. Others including Ernst Udet, Werner Voss, Lothar von Richthofen, Hermann Goring, Carl Jacobs, Hans Kirschstein and many others. Revolutionary for its time but really a copy of the Sopwith Triplane, the Fokker had a tremendous capability for manoeuvreability which made it the best fighter for close in air combat equaled only by the Sopwith Camel.
The ModelWe have recreated the DR1 in 1/4 scale in what we feel to be the best ARF Flying scale model available anywhere of this magnificent aircraft. To start with, the features of our DR1 Fuselage, this is made up of 1/4 diameter dowel to simulate the welded tube structure of the original aircraft the cross bracing in the fuselage bays are all fabricated from 1/16 diameter cane which is strong and accurately duplicates the cable bracing in these areas. All fuselage fairings are hand picked sheet wood in scale locations. These are hand formed aluminium 1/16 sheet shaped to fit over the Gun mounts and forward upper fairings
over centre section and gun mounts to forward fuselage. Cowling are hand formed aluminium sheet
WingsBuilt up over the original box spar type construction ,all wing panels incorporate the classic Fokker sawtooth leading edge structural detail with absolute
accuracy The ribs are of the original under-cambered section Hi lift slow stall characteristics. They are all at proper scale locations. Ailerons are done with cane reed
formed bows and hinged with scale strap hinges of brass sheet hand cut and drilled. Trailing edges are of stainless steel thin diameter wire stretched and pulled tight by the fabric covering as per the original airframe construction. This results in an accurate reproduction and lightness but with adequate strength.
Tail surfaces feature cane formed bows and again our strap brass sheet formed hinges faithful to the original. Rudder is cane formed to duplicate the steel tube construction of this component again with the strap hinges. Wheels are of aluminium rims with soft steel spokes and fabric covered.
